After many years of practice, surgery and teaching as a professor of thoracic surgery at Dong-A University Hospital, Dr. Bang treats varicose veins, arteriovenous fistulas, PICC lines and peripheral vascular disease on the basis of that cardiac and vascular experience.
As we age, the body works a little less efficiently. Because we stand and walk upright, the veins of the leg bear the pull of gravity for a lifetime, and conditions of the spine, the joints of the leg and the blood vessels are far more common in humans than in other animals.
Varicose veins are not simply bulging vessels. Changes in the vein wall and its valves make it a chronic venous disease that can lead to heaviness, swelling, numbness, night cramps and changes in the skin. When the symptoms overlap with spinal or joint conditions, the vascular problem is sometimes found late.
According to 2024 national statistics, life expectancy in Korea is 83.7 years while healthy life expectancy is 65.5. On average, 18 years are spent living with and treating illness. Even when a condition arises unavoidably, from inherited or environmental causes, not delaying treatment is what allows for a healthy later life.

In vascular disease, a small difference can change both the diagnosis and the direction of treatment. Rather than judging by the veins you can see, we look together at when the symptoms began, how the leg has changed, what the ultrasound shows, and how the patient lives.
Drawing on long experience in university hospital practice and surgery, Dr. Bang aims for consultations that explain things calmly and in detail, so that patients understand the state of their own veins.
